“Impressions of Italy” Show at Lehigh Valley College Aug. 15-17 Showcases Paintings, Drawings by Professor James Doddy
Center Valley (August 7, 2006) – “Impressions of Italy,” an exhibition of 14 oil paintings and six charcoal and pencil drawings by James Doddy, will be on display in the atrium at Lehigh Valley College, Center Valley, from 6-9 p.m. Aug 15-17. Doddy is an assistant professor in visual communications at the college.
Doddy, a resident of Bangor , produced the artworks following a trip he made last November to Florence , Venice , and Rome . The exhibition features his personal impressions of historical landmarks and selected scenes, with particular attention focused on expressing mood with light and color. Among the subjects he depicts are the Tiber River, the Coliseum, and details of various fountains in Rome; canal views, the Bridge of Sighs, a puppeteer, and a gondolier in Venice; and shop windows and a famous carousel in Florence.
“I was so impressed with what I saw,” Doddy said. “I did some sketching in-country, and used some of my photos for reference. These paintings are personal for me and, I hope, evocative for the viewer.”
Doddy, a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art with a B.F.A. in illustration, is a nationally recognized and honored fine artist. His work continues to appear in numerous exhibitions, galleries, magazines, and newspapers. An active member of the U.S. Air Force Art Program, he has produced numerous paintings for the Air Force Art Collection; these paintings are on display in the Pentagon in Arlington , Va.
In addition to his teaching, his activities in the world of commercial and communications arts have been varied and successful. As an art director for an international magazine publisher, his graphic expertise and direction were instrumental in publication design formats. While heading a multi-media group's creative department, he designed and executed graphic programs/campaigns for several Fortune 500 companies. He has also been an illustrator for children's art projects and national fast food chains.
